About offer types
There are two types of offers: Exchange Internship and Global Internship, each with different characteristics.
What is Exchange Internship?
This is an internship in which the sending country matches one student with an offer exchanged on a 1:1 basis with another country.
What is Global Internship?
This is an internship in which several countries nominate ‘a maximum of two students’ for one offer and the host country/Internship host selects the student from among them.
You will be assigned to one of the offers posted on the Exchange Platform from time to time by contacting IAESTE Japan with your request.

Minimum English Proficiency Requirements
The minimum English score requirement depends on the offer type you selected at the time of application.
Scores must have been obtained on or after March 2025.
| Examination | Exchange Internship | Global Internship |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (from Jan. 2026) | 4 | 4.5 |
| TOEFL iBT (before Jan. 2026) | 72(*1) | 86(*1) |
| IELTS | 5.5 | 6.5 |
| Cambridge English Qualifications | B2 First | C1 Advanced |
| STEP Eiken | Grade Pre-1 | Grade Pre-1 |
| TOEIC Listening & Reading | 650 | 785 |
*1: Because the TOEFL iBT score reporting system changed in January 2026, applicants may use TOEFL iBT scores obtained before the change for the time being. However, as some internship hosts may require the new TOEFL iBT score, we strongly recommend obtaining a new score before your Nomination Documents are submitted.
Notes on English Proficiency after Application
- Many IAESTE member countries primarily evaluate applicants based on TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English Qualifications. In some European countries, TOEIC scores may not be accepted. Proof of speaking and writing proficiency may also be required.
- The minimum scores listed above are required for application. However, practical English communication skills are essential, as some host organizations conduct interviews before making their selection.
- Some host countries require proof of Speaking and Writing proficiency. If you only have a TOEIC Listening & Reading score, IAESTE Japan may ask you to complete an additional interview or submit results from another English test. You will be contacted if this applies to you.
